EU approves Malta's 60.6 million euro Social Climate Fund for vulnerable homes and small businesses
brusselstimes.comThe European Commission has approved Malta's Social Climate Plan, unlocking 60.6 million euros in funding through 2032. The money comes from the EU's Social Climate Fund, which is linked to the new ETS2 carbon pricing system for buildings and road transport. Malta will use the funds to improve energy efficiency in homes, including roof insulation, heat pump water heaters, and solar panels with battery storage, as well as to support vulnerable micro-enterprises with electric mobility and charging infrastructure. The plan targets over 30,000 vulnerable transport users with community transport services and aims to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 3,500 tonnes of CO2 equivalent between 2026 and 2032. The EU's Social Climate Fund is expected to mobilize at least 86.7 billion euros across member states over the same period, using revenues from the new emissions trading system. This is a concrete example of how carbon pricing revenues are being recycled to support a just transition for households and small businesses.
