EU adopts first carbon farming certification rules under CRCF Regulation for mineral soils, peatlands, and afforestation

The European Commission has adopted the first technical certification methodologies for carbon farming under the EU Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming Regulation. The new delegated act covers three activity categories: agriculture and agroforestry on mineral soils, rewetting and restoration of peatlands, and afforestation. These rules turn broad quality criteria into specific requirements operators must meet to get certified and access financial rewards for climate-beneficial land management. Certification schemes can now apply for recognition and start certifying activities across member states once the delegated regulation enters into force. The framework aims to give land managers a reliable income stream tied to sustainable practices, addressing the credibility gap that has kept many farmers out of voluntary carbon markets. The Commission says the rules also support biodiversity, ecosystem services, and long term food security alongside carbon accounting.
