EU adopts carbon farming certification methodologies under CRCF Regulation

The European Commission has adopted three certification methodologies for carbon farming under the Carbon Removals and Carbon Farming (CRCF) Regulation. These cover agriculture and agroforestry on mineral soils, rewetting and restoration of peatlands, and afforestation. The rules aim to provide a consistent and transparent framework for certifying carbon farming activities across the EU, helping farmers and land managers access financial rewards for sustainable practices. The methodologies were developed after a public consultation and discussions with the Expert Group on Carbon Removals. Once the delegated regulation enters into force, certification schemes can apply for recognition of compliance. This is a practical step toward making carbon farming a credible part of the EU's climate strategy, though the real test will be in how easily operators can meet the technical requirements and how quickly certification schemes get approved.
