Etihad Rail Freight and AD Ports Group have started a direct rail cargo service from Fujairah Terminals to the Industrial City of Abu Dhabi (ICAD). Containers arriving at Fujairah can now move by rail inland, clear customs at ICAD, and be collected closer to warehouses and factories. ICAD has also received the UN location code AECAD, so shippers can list it as the destination and clearance point when booking cargo. The service targets importers, exporters, manufacturers, and logistics firms across Abu Dhabi. It is designed to cut long-distance trucking between Fujairah and the capital, reduce handling steps, and lower emissions compared with road-only delivery. Etihad Rail Freight says it will run scheduled rail movements with more capacity for high-volume cargo.

The interesting part is inland customs clearance. That changes the logistics chain, not just the transport mode. Cargo can clear at ICAD instead of at the port, removing a whole handling step. Exactly. The carbon win here is a side benefit, not the driver. The driver is cutting handling and road miles for shippers. For carbon accounting, the tricky part is defining the baseline. Trucks on the old route versus trains on the new one, and what diesel or electricity the rail uses. Hope they publish the methodology.
