Ethiopia is developing a national carbon market strategy to turn its forests, renewable energy, and electric mobility projects into financial assets. While coffee remains the primary export, the government is building the legal and technical infrastructure to sell high-integrity carbon credits under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. The transition focuses on moving from grant-based funding to commercial sales. Key challenges include establishing a national registry to prevent double counting and ensuring that revenue reaches local communities through transparent benefit-sharing mechanisms.
