Eskom has announced the launch of Eskom Green, a dedicated renewable energy subsidiary aimed at accelerating utility-scale solar, wind, and storage projects in South Africa. The new business will initially operate within Eskom Holdings before becoming a wholly owned subsidiary. Eskom Green targets 6GW of carbon-free electricity by 2030 and up to 32GW by 2040, focusing on large industrial customers in mining and manufacturing to help them meet carbon border regulations and ESG requirements. The subsidiary plans to offer power purchase agreements directly to large users, combining generation with storage and firming technologies for round-the-clock supply. Pricing will be transparent, with separate charges for energy and network fees. The first phase targets industrial customers, while a second phase will expand to municipalities and regional markets. Funding will come from special-purpose vehicles and public-private partnerships to limit pressure on Eskom's balance sheet.

Eskom finally moving on renewables at scale. 32GW by 2040 is ambitious but the 6GW by 2030 target is more concrete. Wonder how they'll fund the SPVs without loading more debt.

6GW by 2030 is doable if they actually have grid capacity. Transmission is the bottleneck everywhere in SA. Hope the article mentioned wheeling charges because that will decide if it's viable.

The focus on industrial customers makes sense with CBAM coming. Mining and smelters need to show lower carbon content or lose export access. Eskom Green could be a lifeline there.

The 75MW Lethabo solar plant is tiny but it's a start. If they can replicate that across old coal sites using existing infrastructure, that could scale fast. Komati is a good test case.

Interesting that they benchmarked 20 international utilities. Most state-owned utilities struggle to spin off clean energy units without regulatory friction. The Section 34 allocations will be key.
