Eskom launches Eskom Green subsidiary to deliver 32GW of renewable capacity by 2040 in South Africa

Eskom has launched a new renewable energy business called Eskom Green, aiming to deliver up to 32GW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2040. The subsidiary will initially operate within Eskom Holdings before becoming a wholly owned subsidiary with its own board. It targets large industrial customers in mining and manufacturing, offering power purchase agreements and round-the-clock electricity through a mix of generation, storage, and firming technologies. The first phase focuses on 6GW of carbon-free electricity by 2030, with 17 priority projects identified at coal-fired power station sites to reduce costs and speed up deployment. The move aligns with South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan 2025, which targets 5.6GW of renewable capacity by 2030 and 32GW by 2040. Eskom Green will fund projects through special-purpose vehicles and public-private partnerships to limit balance sheet pressure. The initiative is a response to carbon border regulations and ESG requirements in export markets, aiming to help South African industries decarbonize while staying competitive. It also leverages Eskom's existing power generation expertise and infrastructure, including the 75MW Lethabo Solar PV project in the Free State and developments at Komati Power Station.
