Eskom launches Eskom Green renewable energy business for industrial decarbonization in South Africa

Eskom has launched Eskom Green, a new renewable energy business targeting large industrial customers in mining and manufacturing. The state utility aims to supply low-carbon power to help South African exporters meet carbon content requirements from markets like the European Union's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM). Eskom Green will focus on solar, wind, battery storage, and pumped storage projects with an initial goal of 2GW operational capacity and a pipeline of 6GW of carbon-free electricity by 2030. The new entity will operate as a wholly owned subsidiary with an independent board, contracting directly with large users under take-or-pay structures. Pricing will separate wholesale tariffs from network and wheeling charges for transparency. Eskom Green plans to complement private sector developers and help bridge the generation gap outlined in South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan 2025, while supporting the country's electricity market reforms.
