Eskom Green subsidiary targets 32GW of renewable energy and storage by 2040 to help South African industries decarbonize

Eskom has launched Eskom Green, a dedicated renewable energy subsidiary that plans to deliver up to 32GW of renewable energy and storage capacity by 2040. The new business will focus on large industrial customers in mining and manufacturing, offering power purchase agreements backed by solar, wind, and storage projects. Eskom expects to have 6GW of carbon-free electricity available by 2030 from projects already under development, including a 75MW solar facility at Lethabo Power Station. The initiative aligns with South Africa's Integrated Resource Plan 2025 and aims to help industries meet carbon border regulations and ESG requirements. Eskom Green will use special-purpose vehicles and public-private partnerships to fund projects, limiting pressure on the utility's balance sheet. The first phase targets large industrial users, with a second phase expanding to municipalities and regional customers through the Southern African Power Pool.
