South Africa's state-owned power utility Eskom has launched Eskom Green, a new business unit dedicated to developing utility-scale renewable energy projects. The unit aims to help large industrial customers decarbonize by providing solar, wind, and battery storage solutions, with a target of 2GW operational capacity initially and up to 6GW of carbon-free electricity by 2030. Eskom Green will co-locate renewable projects at existing coal power station sites, leveraging existing grid infrastructure for faster deployment. The unit plans to offer transparent pricing with wholesale tariffs passed through at cost, and will use take-or-pay contracts to secure financing. This move supports South Africa's IRP 2025 targets of 5.6GW renewables by 2030 and 32GW by 2040.
