Eskasoni First Nation and Aeon Blue form joint venture to make jet fuel from seawater in Cape Breton
cbc.caEskasoni First Nation has become the majority owner of eFuels Mi'kmaq Limited, a joint venture with Aeon Blue that plans to produce drop-in jet fuel from seawater and captured CO2. The pilot project will sit on band-owned land at Sydport Industrial Park in Cape Breton and is expected to begin producing fuel next year, with full commercialization targeted by 2030. Eskasoni invested $1.5 million in the project. According to CBC, the process splits hydrogen from seawater and combines it with CO2 drawn from the air, using wind power from onshore and offshore sources. Aeon Blue moved from Texas to Nova Scotia partly because of federal incentives and access to the Verschuren Centre. The venture expects to train 12 band members next year and could create up to 80 full-time jobs at commercial scale.
