Erewash Borough Council has implemented a weekly food waste collection service to divert organic matter from landfills. The initiative aims to reduce methane emissions, a potent greenhouse gas, by processing waste into biofuel and fertilizer. Early data shows over 257 tonnes of food waste collected in the first month. While the rollout faced some initial logistical challenges, the program helps the council move toward mandatory English food waste collection requirements set for 2026.
