Ensys has signed a joint R&D agreement with KEPCO and two Korean power generators to develop turquoise hydrogen production and convert the solid carbon byproducts into battery materials. The consortium aims to produce 700 kilograms of turquoise hydrogen per day by 2031, generating roughly 765 metric tons of solid carbon annually. Ensys plans to refine that carbon for use as conductive additives in LFP battery electrodes and as carbon coating materials for current collectors, with potential expansion into all-solid-state battery anodes. The project runs through May 2030 with a 6.3 billion won budget. KEPCO has been working on turquoise hydrogen since 2017 and built a pilot system in 2024. The partners claim the process can cut production costs by over 30% by using existing natural gas infrastructure.
