Dubai's ENOC Group has signed a memorandum of understanding with Allied Biofuels Holding to explore the distribution of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) and e-SAF. The partnership focuses on sourcing these lower-emission fuels from a production facility currently under development in Uzbekistan. This initiative supports the UAE's Net Zero 2050 Strategy and the Sustainable Aviation Fuel Roadmap 2030. The two companies will now assess the commercial feasibility of establishing a long-term supply chain to help the aviation sector reduce its carbon footprint.

The e-SAF part is the real question. That requires massive amounts of renewable electricity and captured carbon. Does Uzbekistan have the grid capacity and low-carbon power to make this viable without just shifting emissions elsewhere?

The MoU is a standard first step, but the real driver will be the certification standards. If the e-SAF produced in Uzbekistan doesn't meet international aviation carbon accounting rules, the commercial feasibility disappears.

Interesting that they are sourcing from Uzbekistan rather than building local production first. It shows the current global shortage of SAF is pushing the UAE to look for any scalable integrated facility they can find.
