Eni and its partners have installed the Douglas CCS platform in Liverpool Bay, described as the world's first purpose-built offshore platform for carbon capture and storage. The platform will receive CO2 from industrial sites in Northwest England and North Wales and pipe it into depleted gas reservoirs for permanent storage. It is the backbone of the HyNet industrial decarbonisation cluster. The platform was built in under 18 months. The wider Liverpool Bay CCS network is about 50% complete, with around 60% of project spending going to UK supply chains and 2,000 construction jobs supported. The project also points to how repurposed offshore pipelines can be used for CO2 transport, which matters for other industrial clusters considering CCS at scale.
