Researchers are testing the use of crushed basalt rock to improve soil nutrition in Brazilian cocoa farms. This process, known as enhanced rock weathering, neutralizes soil acidity and increases crop yields while actively removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The study suggests that smallholder farmers could potentially fund these soil improvements by selling carbon credits. By integrating cocoa with native forests, this approach aims to reduce the need for deforestation while providing a new revenue stream for local communities through carbon sequestration.
