Enhanced rock weathering (ERW) is moving from a theoretical concept to an investable carbon removal solution. By spreading reactive silicate rock dust on soil, the process accelerates natural CO2 absorption, with some estimates suggesting a potential for 2 to 4 gigatons of annual removal. Despite interest from major corporate buyers, the industry faces hurdles in measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV). Experts argue that ERW should be viewed as a variable tool depending on soil conditions rather than a binary success or failure, emphasizing the need for cost-effective implementation for farmers.
