Researchers are testing the use of crushed basalt rock dust to improve soil fertility in Brazilian cacao farms. This process, known as enhanced rock weathering, neutralizes soil acidity and increases crop yields while permanently removing carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. The study compares commercial farms and traditional cabruca systems to determine carbon sequestration rates. Findings suggest that smallholder farmers could potentially fund these soil improvements by selling carbon credits based on the amount of CO2 captured in the soil.
