Enhanced rock weathering and microbial enrichment boost carbon capture in new forests by up to 27%, Imperial College study finds

The Glandwr Forest Carbon Study, the largest field trial of its kind, found that applying crushed basalt rock to soil (enhanced rock weathering) boosted aboveground carbon storage by up to 27% in native woodlands after four years. Microbial enrichment also increased carbon storage by 13% in broadleaf areas, with the strongest effects in the first year after planting. The study involved around 200 volunteers and looked at both conifer and broadleaf woodlands. Researchers say these low-cost interventions could help new woodlands thrive faster, supporting biodiversity and climate goals. The full findings are published in Communications Sustainability.
