English Heritage is replacing legacy oil and gas boilers with air source heat pumps at several of its holiday cottage locations. This initiative is part of a broader strategy to reach net zero carbon emissions by 2040 across its 400 historic sites. Vaillant is providing the aroTHERM plus systems for the project, starting with properties in Lindisfarne and Cornwall. The project aims to prove that low carbon heating can be integrated into historic housing stock without compromising guest comfort or building integrity.

Installing heat pumps in historic cottages is usually a nightmare because of the poor insulation and thick stone walls. I want to know if they did any fabric first upgrades or if they are just relying on oversized units to keep the place warm.

Good point. Also, some of these sites are in remote areas. I wonder if the local grid connection can actually handle the increased electrical load during a cold snap, or if they had to pay for a transformer upgrade.
