Researchers in Germany and the UK are using traditional glassmaking additives to improve zeolitic imidazolate framework (ZIF) glass. By adding compounds like sodium benzimidazolate, they have successfully lowered the glass transition temperature and increased the pore volume necessary for trapping greenhouse gases. This breakthrough makes the production of carbon-capturing materials more viable by allowing them to be processed at lower temperatures. The resulting ZIF-62 glass can selectively separate carbon dioxide from nitrogen-rich gas mixtures, moving the technology closer to real world industrial application.
