Karnataka-based startup Enerzi is developing microwave plasma systems to extract clean hydrogen and carbon nanopowder from methane. This process creates high-value materials for batteries and conductive coatings while producing hydrogen for heavy industry and mobility. The company recently raised 20 crore rupees to scale its technology. By converting methane into solid carbon and hydrogen, the system offers a pathway for decarbonizing sectors like steel and chemical manufacturing.

Interesting approach to methane cracking. Producing solid nanocarbon instead of CO2 is the key here. I wonder if they have a clear buyer for the nanopowder at scale or if that is just a side benefit to make the hydrogen cheaper.
The energy intensity of microwave plasma is the real question. If the electricity comes from a coal heavy grid, the net emissions might not be as clean as they claim. Do we know the actual energy required per kg of hydrogen?
That is where the certification comes in. If they want to hit global markets, they will need to prove the carbon intensity of the input power to qualify for green hydrogen subsidies in the EU or US.
If this can be modularized for industrial sites that already have methane feeds, it could save a lot on transport. The maintenance on these plasma systems usually kills the ROI, so I hope they have a plan for electrode wear.
