Energy Dome to build 23 MW / 200 MWh CO2 battery in Ireland for long-duration storage

The project uses compressed carbon dioxide in a closed loop to store energy for up to 10 hours, offering a long-duration alternative to lithium-ion batteries. The system charges by compressing CO2 into liquid and discharges by expanding it through a turbine to generate electricity. The site in Ireland will be one of the first commercial scale deployments of this technology outside of Italy. Long-duration storage is becoming more important as grids add more wind and solar. Ireland has a high share of wind power, so a 10 hour storage asset could help shift excess wind generation into evening demand peaks. Energy Dome claims the system uses off the shelf components and avoids the degradation and fire risks of lithium batteries. The project is expected to reach financial close later this year with construction starting in 2027.
