Energy Dome CO2 Batteries: 24-Hour Storage for Renewable Grids
technologyreview.comEnergy Dome uses compressed carbon dioxide in large storage domes to deliver long-duration grid storage for up to 24 hours. Its first commercial plant in Sardinia, Italy, started up in 2025 and has a 200 MWh capacity, enough for about 18,000 homes for 10 hours. The company says it can build plants in about two years because it uses standard compressors and storage tanks rather than custom hardware. The company has a pipeline of around 30 GWh of projects across five continents, including a 200 MWh deal with Google in Ireland expected online in 2028. Its roundtrip efficiency is about 70%, lower than lithium-ion's roughly 90%, but Energy Dome says its economics improve for longer durations. A version paired with natural gas turbines cuts costs but produces emissions, so buyers need to check which configuration they are getting.
