Energy Dome and Google are moving forward with a 23 MW/200 MWh carbon dioxide battery in County Offaly, Ireland. The project has land, planning permission, a grid connection, and a 10 year capacity contract from Eirgrid. It will be built on a former peat plant site near existing solar and wind generation and high voltage lines serving Dublin. The system compresses CO2 to store energy and expands it through a turbine to discharge. It does not use lithium or other hard to source minerals. Construction is expected to finish in 2028, with a second 200 MWh unit planned for the same site. This is the first commercial deployment under the Energy Dome and Google partnership, following a similar 19 MW/200 MWh project announced in Arizona. Both projects are sited on retired fossil fuel plant land. The Irish facility has a 10 year capacity contract from Eirgrid. Energy Dome says the technology is meant to provide long duration storage and grid flexibility without relying on lithium supply chains. The company has identified a pipeline of additional sites globally for future projects.

Interesting to see a CO2 battery moving past pilot stage. 200 MWh is real capacity. The 10 year capacity contract from Eirgrid probably made the financial case work. Would like to know the round trip efficiency though.

Efficiency is the big unknown. CO2 compression and expansion cycles tend to lose more than lithium. But if the cost per MWh stored is low enough and duration is 8+ hours, it could compete for different use cases. The 2028 timeline is also ambitious for a first of its kind at this scale.

Building on a former peat plant site is a nice touch. Repurposing that land and grid infrastructure avoids a lot of new permitting headaches. The proximity to the Rhode Green Energy Park also means it can soak up curtailed wind and solar.

The 10 year capacity contract is the key detail here. Without that revenue certainty, a first of a kind CO2 battery at this scale would struggle to get financed. The question is whether these projects can stand on merchant revenue alone after the contract ends.
