Austrian utility Energie Steiermark has taken a final investment decision on a 5MW green hydrogen plant in Bergla, western Styria. The 25 million euro project will use renewable power from local wind farms to produce hydrogen via electrolysis. Construction is expected to start this year with completion targeted for 2027. The plant will supply hydrogen via pipeline to Wolfram Bergbau und Hutten AG, which will use it as a reducing agent in tungsten powder production, replacing fossil-derived hydrogen. They say it will use power from 105MW of new wind farms. At 5MW electrolyzer capacity, that's a lot of headroom. Wonder if they plan to run baseload or just when wind is high. Curtailment avoidance maybe?

The tungsten angle is interesting. Most green hydrogen talk is about steel or ammonia. This shows the substitution can work in specialty metals too. If the economics pencil out here, it could open up other niche industrial applications.
