ENEOS Corporation has demonstrated a synthetic fuel produced by combining carbon dioxide captured from the air with hydrogen from water. This drop-in fuel works in existing internal combustion engines, potentially decarbonizing heavy transport and aviation where electrification is difficult. While the technology is proven through successful shuttle bus trials in Osaka, commercial scaling remains paused. High energy requirements and production costs currently make these synthetic fuels more expensive than traditional petroleum.
