Elopak has started using low-carbon aluminium in its liquid packaging cartons at plants in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Ukraine. The switch reduces the carbon footprint of a standard aseptic Pure-Pak carton from 53g to 49g CO2e per carton, an 8% drop. The low-carbon aluminium is produced using renewable electricity instead of fossil fuels, cutting emissions while keeping the barrier layer that protects food from oxygen and light. The company also offers aluminium-free Pure-Pak eSense cartons and uses 100% renewable electricity across its operations. This move comes as the EU tightens packaging regulations and retailers demand measurable emission cuts. Elopak says the change helps customers meet sustainability targets without sacrificing shelf life or food safety.

The real question is how much low-carbon aluminium they can actually source at scale. Renewable electricity for smelting is great but supply is limited in some regions.

Transition step is the key phrase. If the aluminium free eSense carton works at scale and costs similar, that 8% reduction might be obsolete in a few years.
