Elopak Cuts Carton Carbon Footprint by 8% Using Low-Carbon Aluminium Made with Renewable Electricity
dairynews.todayElopak, a packaging supplier, has started using low-carbon aluminium produced with renewable electricity in its European carton manufacturing. The change applies to standard ambient cartons made in the Netherlands, Denmark, and Ukraine. According to the company, this shift immediately reduces the carbon footprint of a standard aseptic Pure-Pak carton from 53 to 49 grams of CO2e per carton, an 8% drop measured from cradle to gate. Aluminium is a key material in ambient cartons because it blocks light and oxygen, which helps extend shelf life without preservatives. By sourcing aluminium made with renewable electricity instead of fossil-based power, Elopak targets the upstream emissions of its supply chain. The company says life-cycle assessments show liquid packaging cartons can have a lower carbon footprint than plastic alternatives, and it plans to work with customers to further lower the climate impact of packaged products.
