Norway's Elkem has secured NOK 87 million from Enova to replace fossil coal with biocarbon in its silicon production processes. The project aims to double the share of renewable carbon used in its Norwegian smelters by 2030, potentially cutting fossil CO2 emissions by 0.5 million tonnes annually. Between 2026 and 2028, Elkem will test various biomass inputs and improve handling systems across five plants. This initiative focuses on creating industrial-grade biocarbon products that can withstand the high temperatures required for quartz to silicon conversion.
