Electric trucks, mines, farms, and low-carbon fuels can cut Australia's foreign fuel reliance, report finds

A new report from the Superpower Institute says Australia can reduce its dependence on imported fuel by investing in electric trucks, electrified mining and farming equipment, and low-carbon fuels. The study argues that drilling for more oil won't help much because domestic resources are limited and new production takes too long. Instead, the focus should be on renewable energy technologies that can replace imported diesel and petrol directly. The report comes after Middle East conflict caused fuel shortages and price spikes in Australia. It says electrifying heavy transport, mines, and farms, plus scaling up low-carbon fuel production, would both cut emissions and improve fuel security. The findings add to the case for faster deployment of renewables and electric vehicles in sectors that currently rely on imported liquid fuels.
