Electric Ferries Can Cut Lifetime Costs by 8-15% on Short Sea Routes, Kongsberg Says
seatrade-maritime.comKongsberg Maritime says shipowners should design vessels for regulatory uncertainty instead of waiting for one global carbon standard. Its modeling finds fully electric RoPax ferries can have 8-15% lower lifetime costs than diesel equivalents on European short-sea routes through 2040, despite higher upfront costs. The advantage shows up on busy corridors like Tallinn-Helsinki and Dover-Calais. The analysis covers cargo and passenger focused concepts, with battery capacity up to around 100 MWh and modular options. The harder part is shore-side charging. Ports, grid operators, and owners need to coordinate on high-power connections. For ships without a clean electrification path, the advice is to cut energy demand, leave room for alternative fuels, and avoid locking into one reading of a rulebook still in draft.
