Electric F35 powerboat targets historic Harmsworth Trophy in electric boat race

A fully electric foiling powerboat, the SpiritBARTech F35, has set a benchmark time in the historic British International Harmsworth Trophy, which now exclusively uses electric propulsion. The boat completed the Poole-Cowes-Poole course in 1 hour, 36 minutes and 53 seconds, averaging 30.35 knots. Developed by BAR Technologies and Spirit Yachts, the F35 uses hydrofoil technology to reduce drag and extend range up to 100 nautical miles. This shift from combustion engines to electric power in a century-old trophy reflects broader marine industry trends toward efficiency and reduced emissions. The time-trial format, running from May to October, allows other competitors to challenge the F35's record. The project demonstrates how racing technology can transfer to commercial and leisure applications, potentially lowering carbon footprints in maritime transport.
