A new report from the Greater South East Net Zero Hub and the Cremation Society of Great Britain finds that electric cremators running on green electricity can reduce the carbon footprint of a cremation by 80 to 90 percent compared to standard gas-fired units. Despite this, only about 1 percent of UK cremators are electric. The UK performs roughly 550,000 cremations each year, and a single gas cremation emits between 62kg and 245kg of CO2 depending on the study. The Memoria Group, which operates the UK's largest number of electric cremators, is pushing for more transparency around funeral emissions. The company notes that coffin material choices like bamboo, banana leaf, or cardboard can have hidden carbon costs or operational drawbacks. The key takeaway is that the type of cremator matters more than the coffin for overall emissions, and families should ask about it before arranging a service.
