Eighth grader wins 3M Young Scientist Challenge for algae-aragonite ocean acidification system
news.3m.comAn eighth grader from Connecticut won the 2026 3M Young Scientist Challenge for building a system that uses macroalgae and aragonite to reduce ocean acidification. Raji Doshi's project grows algae alongside natural calcium carbonate buffers to raise seawater alkalinity and lower dissolved CO2. She also built a computational model to find the right aragonite dose, which could help coastal communities apply the method at practical scales. The competition pairs finalists with 3M scientists, and Doshi worked with product engineering specialist Deborah Isabelle. She took home $25,000 and the title of America's Top Young Scientist. The runners-up, Aaisha Asif and Sharvi Mahajan, each received $1,000. The annual challenge is part of a 3M and Discovery Education program that gives middle schoolers a path from idea to prototype.
