Egypt's Industry Ministry Partners with IRSC for Solar-Powered Industrial Zones and Shams El-Sinaa Initiative
egyptoil-gas.comEgypt's Ministry of Industry is pushing forward with a green transition for the industrial sector, meeting with IRSC Renewable Energy Solutions to explore solar projects and microgrids for factories. The discussions center on the Shams El-Sinaa initiative, which aims to install rooftop solar on 7,000 factories across the country, targeting 1,000 megawatts of capacity. This would require about 7 million square meters of rooftop space, roughly 10% of Egypt's certified industrial base. The ministry is framing this as a competitiveness issue, not just an environmental one. Minister Khaled Hashem specifically cited the European Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM), which will require Egyptian exporters to lower their carbon footprint to maintain access to European markets. IRSC, which has been developing solar for industry since 2011, is positioned to help with engineering and local content. The goal is to create a replicable model for a solar-powered industrial zone that could be scaled across the country.
