Egypt's Green Sharm project cuts emissions by 85,100 tons with solar and waste upgrades
english.ahram.org.egEgypt completed 50 Green Sharm projects in Sharm El-Sheikh, cutting emissions by 85,100 tons. The six year initiative covered 42 square kilometers and added over 4 megawatts of solar capacity at airports, museums, schools, and hotels. The city's total renewable energy capacity now reaches 55 megawatts, covering about 18 percent of its electricity use. The project also installed 891 solar powered lighting poles, improved waste management, and protected marine ecosystems in Ras Mohammed, Nabq, and Abu Galum protectorates. It builds on green measures introduced before and after Egypt hosted COP27 in 2022. Supported by UNDP and the Global Environment Facility, the project runs until June 2028. Officials aim to make Sharm El-Sheikh a model for sustainable tourism through low carbon technologies, biodiversity protection, and stricter environmental rules for hotels and diving centers.
