Egypt gets $66 million from AfDB for first phase of Dandara solar plant with battery storage

Egypt secured $66 million in funding from the African Development Bank for the first phase of the 500 MW Dandara solar project in Nagaa Hammadi. The project includes a 100 MWh battery storage system and is expected to reach full operation by early 2028. It will generate around 1,373 GWh of electricity per year and cut CO2 emissions by about half a million tons annually. The power will be sold to Misr Aluminum Company under a long-term take-or-pay PPA. The AfDB noted the project helps EgyptAlum protect its European market share as the EU's Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism takes effect. The total project cost is over $290 million, with additional financing from other development banks through the NWFE program.

1,373 GWh from 500 MW solar with battery. That is a capacity factor around 31 percent which is solid for that region. Would like to know the storage duration on the 100 MWh system though.

The CBAM link is the real story here. Industrial decarbonization via corporate PPA is a repeatable model if the offtaker is creditworthy. EgyptAlum being listed helps de risk the financing.

Half a million tons CO2 per year claimed. Would be good to see the methodology behind that number. Still, 500 MW solar with storage is a meaningful step for Egypt's 10 GW target.
