Egni Co-op secures £1.4m to expand community-owned rooftop solar across Wales

Egni Co-op, a community energy organization in Wales, has secured a £1.4 million loan from the Development Bank of Wales to build around 2 MW of new rooftop solar on schools and public buildings. The projects are expected to generate 1.9 GWh of renewable electricity each year, with about 65% used directly on site. Over the lifetime of the installations, the co-op estimates carbon savings of roughly 4,500 tonnes. The funding comes from the Welsh Government backed Local Energy Fund and will support local contractors and suppliers. Egni has already installed over 5 MW of rooftop solar across more than 100 sites, saving host buildings more than £1 million in electricity costs. Surplus revenue goes back into community education and energy awareness programs, including an education officer and the Energy Sparks platform for schools.

Nice to see community solar getting real capital. 1.9 GWh per year from 2 MW is a decent capacity factor for rooftop in Wales. The 65% self consumption rate is the key metric here. That is what makes the economics work for schools.

Agreed. The self consumption part is what most articles skip. If you are exporting at wholesale rates the math falls apart. Egni seems to have figured out the site selection process to keep that ratio high.

Does anyone know what the interconnection process looks like for these? 2 MW spread across multiple rooftops means multiple DNO applications. That can kill timelines fast. Would be curious if they hit any delays.

The Local Energy Fund is structured as a loan not a grant. That matters. It means the projects have to pencil out on their own. The Welsh Government is putting capital at risk but expecting repayment. That is a more sustainable model than straight subsidies.

Worth noting they also fund an education officer and Energy Sparks. That is a small cost relative to the capital but it builds long term buy in. If kids understand the meter they will care about the roof. Smart move.

Over 100 sites and 5 MW already installed. That is not a pilot. That is a real portfolio. The £1m in saved electricity costs for host buildings is the kind of number that convinces the next school board to sign up.
