Edonia raises €15 million for microalgae protein ingredient with up to 27x lower carbon footprint than beef
eu-startups.comFrench food tech startup Edonia has raised €15 million to scale production of Edo, a microalgae-based protein ingredient made from spirulina. The round was led by SWEN Blue Ocean 2, Asterion Ventures, EIT Food, and Bpifrance. Edonia says Edo has up to 27 times lower carbon footprint than beef and contains 27g of protein per 100g. Edo is produced through a patented process called Edonization, which cooks spirulina in oil to create a texture similar to minced meat. The company has already secured more than €30 million in pre-contracted revenue and supplies catering group Newrest and ready meal brand Dietbon. A retail test found 40% of customers switched from the meat version to the Edo alternative. Edonia's raise is part of a broader wave of European investment in alternative protein ingredients, with roughly €142 million announced in 2026 across similar startups. The key question is whether the company can scale production while keeping the carbon footprint claim backed by a verified lifecycle assessment.
