Edmonton is hosting the 2026 Carbon Capture Canada conference on September 15 and 16, with about 5,000 attendees. Alberta's energy minister used the stage to push CCS as a way to cut emissions while expanding oil and gas output, citing $2 billion in provincial project investment and more than 18 million tonnes of CO2 stored by Quest and the Alberta Carbon Trunk Line over the past decade. Organizers describe 2026 as the year the sector shifts from federal-provincial memorandums to project execution. Enhance Energy recently broke ground on the Origins CCS project near Edmonton, designed to store up to 1.5 million tonnes of CO2 per year. Attendees can also tour the Deep Sky Alpha direct air capture facility near Innisfail. The open question is whether the federal and Alberta governments turn their MOU into final investment decisions this fall.
