EcoVadis and Kearney Report: Scope 3 Data Quality Drives Supply Chain Decarbonisation
procurementmag.comA new report from EcoVadis and Kearney makes the case that procurement teams are making sourcing decisions on unreliable carbon data. Based on 56,061 companies assessed through EcoVadis' Carbon Action Manager, the findings show that companies relying on low-reliability supplier data report Scope 3 emissions at only 2.5 times operational emissions, while those with verified data report 6.8 times. That gap means many buyers are underestimating their value chain footprint and targeting the wrong suppliers. The report also finds that the top 10% of suppliers account for 95% of reported Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the network, and that only 7% of companies currently engage suppliers on carbon. Companies that do engage are about six times more likely to hit science-based targets. For procurement leaders, the practical takeaway is to focus on a small set of high-impact, highly connected suppliers, use verified data in supplier selection, and push for product-level carbon footprints as methodologies mature.
