New polling from the Centre for British Progress finds more than 80% of economists and policy researchers support fresh North Sea oil and gas exploration as a way to boost UK growth. The think tank argues domestic gas has a lower carbon footprint than imported LNG and that licensing brings tax revenue, so the case for halting exploration is weak. The survey lands as the Jackdaw gasfield decision is pushed back until after the October 8 by-election. Energy Secretary Miatta Fahnbulleh had been expected to approve the project. Critics, including MP Andrew Bowie, say the delay is hurting investor confidence and keeping the industry in limbo.
