EcoCeres and British Airways have extended their sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) supply agreement through 2030. The deal is expected to help British Airways avoid around 198,000 metric tons of lifecycle carbon emissions compared to fossil jet fuel. That is roughly equal to the carbon footprint of 341,000 round-trip economy seats on flights between London and New York. The SAF is made from 100% waste-based feedstocks like used cooking oil. EcoCeres says it can cut lifecycle greenhouse gas emissions by up to 94.4% versus conventional jet fuel. Because SAF is a drop-in fuel, it works in existing aircraft and airport infrastructure without modifications. This extension signals growing demand for SAF as airlines pursue net-zero targets. Long-term supply agreements like this one help stabilize the market and encourage more production capacity. The challenge remains scaling up waste-based SAF supply to meet broader aviation demand.

Nice to see a long term SAF offtake. The 198k ton figure is a decent chunk but still a drop in the bucket for BA total emissions. Would like to see the actual volume in gallons.

Yeah the press release is light on volume numbers. Typical for these deals. The 94.4% lifecycle reduction claim is based on UCO feedstock which is the easy case. Still better than nothing.

UCO supply is finite and geographically constrained. Scaling this to meaningful volumes for an airline like BA means either more feedstock types or synthetic routes. The extension to 2030 gives time but the hard part is feedstock aggregation.

Feedstock availability is the bottleneck everyone knows about. The UK just announced 219 million pounds for low carbon fuels. That could help but the mandate structure matters more. If the price signal is strong enough, more capacity will come.

SAF is a necessary bridge but the real long term play is either synthetic fuels from green hydrogen or actual demand reduction. Airlines are betting on SAF because it requires no fleet changes. That convenience comes with a cost premium.
