A consortium including Ecocem, Cairn, and Kilsaran has received 50,000 euros from Construct Innovate to test low-carbon cement technology at scale in Ireland. The project focuses on validating the ACT cement technology, which claims to reduce CO2 emissions by up to 70 percent compared to traditional cement. This pilot is part of a larger industrial push, including a 50 million euro production plant currently under construction in Dunkirk, France. The Irish demonstration will provide independent technical assessment through University College Dublin to prove the buildability and carbon impact of the material.

A 70 percent reduction in CO2 is a huge claim for cement. I want to see the actual buildability data. If this stuff takes twice as long to cure or costs three times as much per cubic meter, the contractors will just ignore it regardless of the carbon credits.

That is why the independent assessment at UCD matters. The real question is whether Irish procurement rules will actually mandate low-carbon alternatives or if they will keep letting the cheapest high-carbon bid win.

The funding for the pilot is tiny, but the 50 million euro plant in France is the real story. Does anyone know the energy source for that plant? If they are using a dirty grid to make low-carbon cement, the net benefit drops.
