ECO-UVA Project: Testing UV-C Light, Ozone, and Electric Tractors to Cut Vineyard Carbon Footprint
redpac.esThe ECO-UVA Operational Group is testing alternative technologies to reduce the carbon footprint of wine production. The project combines UV-C light and ozone treatments to control fungal diseases like powdery mildew, replacing some conventional chemical sprays. It also trials electric tractors and autonomous systems for vineyard work, aiming to cut emissions from diesel-powered operations. Field demonstrations are underway across vineyards in Catalonia, Aragon, and Castile and León. Partners include major wineries such as Codorníu, Viñas del Vero, and Bodegas Beronia. The project will evaluate effectiveness, energy consumption, costs, and scalability. No final results are available yet, but the approach offers a concrete path to lower-input, lower-emission viticulture.
