Eclipse and Wood: Depleted Oil Reservoirs Could Yield Hydrogen at $0.56/kg With Ultra-Low Carbon Intensity
hydrogen-central.comEclipse Energy announced results of an independent techno-economic assessment by Wood for its RenovaStrata H2 technology, which produces hydrogen from depleted oil reservoirs. The study modeled a levelized cost as low as $0.56 per kilogram and a carbon intensity of 0.076 kgCO2e per kgH2, roughly 99% lower than direct emissions from natural gas combustion. That beats Eclipse's own target of $0.70 per kg and points to a way to extend the life of mature oil and gas assets while producing clean fuel. The assessment is based on modeling, not full commercial operation. It covers engineering configurations, capital and operating costs, power supply options, carbon management strategies, and economic sensitivities. If those assumptions hold up in the field, depleted wells could shift from abandonment liabilities to hydrogen production sites. The full Wood report will determine whether the headline numbers survive real-world conditions.
