Early success for 3D-printed artificial reefs in restoring deep-sea corals off Ireland and France
carlowlive.ieResearchers have reported encouraging early results from a project using 3D-printed artificial reefs to restore deep-sea coral habitats off Ireland and France. The reefs, made from low-carbon concrete incorporating volcanic material, were deployed in 2025 and 2026 at depths of 900 to 1,100 meters. Monitoring shows that coral fragments attached to the reefs are still alive, and the structures have been colonized by sea urchins, crabs, and other marine species. The work is part of the Horizon Europe Redress project, led by the University of Galway, Ifremer, and Sorbonne University. Cold-water corals grow only a few millimeters per year, so natural recovery from bottom trawling damage can take centuries. These artificial structures are designed to accelerate recovery by providing a complex habitat for corals and other marine life. Both restoration sites are now protected from trawling, and researchers will track the reefs over the next several years using photography, video, and 3D mapping. If the approach proves successful, it could be scaled to other damaged reef areas in the Atlantic.
