New polling from E3G and partners across six major European economies shows broad public support for carbon pricing. The survey, conducted by YouGov in France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, and Poland, found that 59% of citizens support requiring heavy industry to pay for its CO2 emissions. Only 23% are opposed. Support cuts across political lines, not just green voters. The poll also found that 72% of respondents want the heaviest emitters to pay more, and 50% prefer investing carbon revenues in industrial decarbonisation over extending free allowances. A majority also want conditions on any remaining free allowances, including reinvestment in emissions reduction and support for workforce reskilling. The findings come as the European Commission prepares its EU ETS proposal for July 15, pushing back against calls to weaken the system.
