E.ON has brought online a 29 MW energy recovery plant in Willebroek, Belgium, that captures syngas from carbon black production and runs a turbine to generate electricity. 29 MW from syngas capture at a carbon black plant. That is a decent sized unit for a byproduct stream. Curious what the capital cost was per MW and how the flue gas treatment affects the overall economics.

The 40,000 homes figure is a bit loose without a capacity factor. 29 MW nameplate at 80% load factor would be around 200 GWh a year. That is real baseload power though, and it is behind the meter first. Grid injection is secondary.

The flue gas treatment for NOx and SOx is the part that makes this more than just a heat recovery project. If Belgium or the EU counts this as avoided emissions under ETS, that changes the payback math. Would like to see the carbon accounting methodology.

Carbon black production is energy intensive. Capturing syngas that would otherwise be flared and running a turbine is a no brainer if the site has the space and the grid connection. The flue gas cleanup is the expensive part. Would be good to know the payback period.
